Self-care Sunday Challenge

Good morning friends! Today is Sunday, and my favorite way to spend Sunday, is by spending a little time taking care of myself. Self-care Sunday is a great tradition to start, and a fantastic way to start your week off in the best possible way. Now, it’s not about having a full on Spa day every Sunday (I mean… I wish it was!), it’s more about adding in a few habits, rituals and activities to your normal Sunday that help you feel your best for the week coming up.

I will admit that I am pretty new to self-care. As a mom, wife and working babe, I tend to put other people first. For a long time I would spend my whole weekends getting the house clean, laundry done, and the errands run, right up until Sunday night. Monday morning I’d head into work feeling less rested than I was when I left on Friday. So I started taking a bit better care of myself on Sundays, and it has made all the difference in the world. Maybe you work on Sundays – That’s ok! You can easily apply any of these to your normal day off!

Now I’m going to challenge you to get started too. This week’s challenge is just 4 simple steps, tailored to bigger bodies, but applicable to all! These are things you can do today to make yourself the priority it deserves to be. Caring for your body isn’t selfish, it’s so important. Your body deserves as much love as you give to those around you. So let’s get started.

  1. Drink an extra glass of water

Ok, this one seems really obvious. But here is some food for thought: If your body is bigger than average (mine is!) you need more water than the average recommendation to be fully hydrated. Dehydration can cause headaches, skin breakouts, fatigue, declined concentration and even moodiness. Take a minute today, stop and add in an extra glass of water to your Sunday. Want to make it special?  How about some strawberry-lime cucumber mint water?! Yum.

2 .Wash and moisturize your face

The skin on your face is often exposed to more damage and torture than the skin on other parts of your body. Maybe you have a regular skin care routine, or maybe you’re like me and you sort of… wing it. Make Sunday the day you spend a little extra time on that beautiful face of yours. Do the face mask, add the serum, exfoliate or do a blackhead strip. Whatever that extra step you take for your face, do it today. My favorite thing to do are Korean facial masks. We have a local asian market where I can get them on the super cheap. They make me feel pampered and my skin just glows afterward. Perfect for Sundays.

3. Eat something delicious

It’s Sunday. The day when for the most part, people slow down a little. For me, it’s when I finally get a chance to cook. My kids call it Pancake Sunday, because breakfast foods are my favorite thing ever. It’s not always pancakes but it is always breakfast foods. Waffles, french toast, eggs, sausage, pancakes, dutch babies… you name it! I love making and eating breakfast on Sundays. It makes me happy. Today, eat something you love. No guilt, no shame. It’s Sunday and you get to do what you love today. Go to brunch with your friends (and have the second mimosa if you want!) Today give yourself a free pass to let go of your issues with food and just eat it already.

4. Forgive yourself

I think it’s easy to read my blog and assume I’ve got my shit together when it comes to body positivity and fat acceptance and the like. Here’s the truth: I have bad days just like you. I have days where I look in the mirror and miss what I looked like 100 pounds ago. When I go through clothing and get sad that those amazing pants don’t fit anymore. I have days where I feel like a fraud, because I’m telling you to love your body and I’m so mad at my own.

Well today, I forgive myself. I’m not perfect. You’re not perfect. We get tripped up. We’re undoing a lifetime of conditioning from our families, our society or the media. Perfection is not expected. So if this week sometime, you said something bad about your body, or you punished it, or you hated it. Forgive yourself. You are human and you are trying. That is all that matters. Wrap your arms around yourself, and say it’s ok. You’re doing better every day.

What are your self-care tips and rituals? I would love to hear them in the comments! I may even use them in a future Self-Care Sunday Challenge!

These are brilliant! It is definitely good advice and I am going to aim to do this on a Sunday. (It might make the Sunday Evening to Monday Morning blues go away!) I absolutely love the Elsa picture! It is an important lesson. I really enjoy spending time on my make-up and hair on a Sunday, even if I am not going out! I don’t tend to be able to during the week!
